Political awareness and involvement is one of the five-point programmatic thrusts of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and it is actualized through dedicated social action. On March 3, 1913, our Founders made history by joining over 5,000 women in the Suffragist Parade in Washington, D.C., demanding the right to vote. This courageous demonstration marked Delta Sigma Theta’s first public act, setting a precedent for a century of advocacy, civic engagement, and social justice work.

Today, the Lufkin Area Alumnae Chapter (LAAC) continues this legacy by actively promoting change and empowering our community through civic engagement. We are committed to expanding the rights and privileges of citizenship for all people while advocating for and protecting the most vulnerable among us. Through education, activism, and advocacy, we encourage informed and responsible participation in all levels of governance.

Our current initiatives include:
  • Sponsoring Voter Registration – Ensuring that all eligible citizens have the opportunity to register and participate in elections.
  • Supporting Voter Education Initiatives – Providing information and resources to help voters make informed decisions at local, state, and national levels.
  • Combating Voter Suppression – Advocating for fair access to the ballot and raising awareness about challenges that limit civic participation.
  • Political Involvement within Our Local Community – Engaging with policymakers, attending town halls, and partnering with organizations to address issues that directly affect the Lufkin community.

Through these efforts, LAAC continues to uphold the values and vision of our Founders—demonstrating that informed, committed, and courageous citizens are essential to creating a just and equitable society. We remain on the move for change, building a legacy of political empowerment that inspires generations to come.

is an opportunity to raise community

and student awareness of the

requirements to vote in Texas.  This

event will include voter information,

registration status checks and recent

changes in voting for Texas.




​Voting is one of the most important ways individuals can participate in the democratic process and have a voice in decisions that affect their communities. Elections determine who will serve in positions of leadership and help shape decisions about education, public safety, economic development, infrastructure, healthcare, and other issues that affect everyday life.
Every election matters. National elections receive significant attention, but state and local elections can have an especially direct impact on the services, policies, and resources available within a community. By participating in elections, voters have an opportunity to express their priorities and take part in determining the direction of their communities.
Voting also strengthens civic participation. When eligible voters become informed, understand what is on the ballot, and participate in elections, they contribute to a government that more fully reflects the people it serves.
